A Case Study on Minviro's Life Cycle Assessment of Green Li-ion'...
In this case study, we explore how Green Li-ion, a technology provider specializing in battery recycling, collaborated with Minviro to conduct a comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) of their proprietary recycling process. Green Li-ion's technology recycles black mass directly into precursor cathode active materials (pCAM) using a unique hydrometallurgical process, differing from conventional methods that produce metal sulfates before generating pCAM. The study, conducted at Green Li-ion’s facility in Atoka, Oklahoma, aimed to understand the environmental impacts, identify optimization hotspots, and quantify differences between their process and standard methods. Results showed a significant reduction in the climate change impact of NMC 622 pCAM and lithium carbonate produced via Green Li-ion's process compared to traditional methods. These findings are now used to inform impact reduction opportunities and stakeholder communication. The blog post details the LCA process, collaboration between Green Li-ion and Minviro, and actionable insights gained, with a testimonial from Stephen Gow, VP Compliance at Green Li-ion, highlighting the value of Minviro's expertise and proprietary software in driving sustainable advancements.
