Key Challenge
The activated carbon industry is dominated by coal-based feedstocks, creating significant climate impacts of around 11.1 kg CO₂-eq per kg produced. Bygen wanted to validate its innovative almond shell–based technology and establish a credible benchmark for sustainable activated carbon production.
Solution
Minviro conducted an independent Life Cycle Assessment aligned with ISO 14040, 14044 and 14067 standards. The study captured cradle-to-gate emissions across Scope 1, Scope 2 and selected Scope 3 categories, ensuring robust comparison with conventional coal-based activated carbon.
Results
Bygen's technology achieved an impact of 0.37 kg CO₂-eq per kg of activated carbon, a 96.7% reduction compared to coal-based production. These results validate Bygen's approach and establish a new benchmark for sustainable activated carbon across industries such as water treatment and pollution control.
